Methodology
## What this measures
Value added by manufacturing in Brazil as a share of gross domestic product, in percent, annual from 1979 to 2025. Manufacturing is ISIC division C (Revision 4 for OECD members): turning materials and components into new products. Each value is dated December 31.
## Why it matters
Manufacturing's share of the economy is the standard measure of industrialisation and of its reverse. It frames debates over reshoring, tariffs, industrial policy and the "premature deindustrialisation" of middle-income economies whose factory share peaks early.
## How to read it
Higher means manufacturing makes up more of the economy. Counting from 1981, it peaked at 34.4% in 1981 and was 11.8% in 2025. A falling share is the usual path as economies get richer and services grow, and it can fall while factory output still rises, because the share is in current prices and manufactured goods tend to get cheaper relative to services. Compare countries on the same measure (country.<iso3>.manufacturing_pct_gdp; the world and regions are manufacturing.wb.va_pct_gdp.<geo>).
## What it does not say
It is a share of nominal GDP, not a measure of real output, employment or productivity. It records where value is added, so a company that designs at home and outsources assembly abroad counts as services at home. Countries compile national accounts on different schedules and revise them; breaks in a country's accounts show up as steps in the line. WDI's Brazil series has two jumps at breaks in Brazil's national accounts (between 1989 and 1990, and between 1994 and 1995), and its 1979 and 1980 values are out of line with the years around them; Palanor's charts start Brazil in 1981.
