Methodology

## What this measures

Domestic credit to the private sector in Switzerland (loans, securities, trade credit) as a share of GDP, one value per year.

## Why it matters

How much the private sector has borrowed relative to income is the backbone of the long-term debt cycle; fast growth in it precedes most banking crises.

## How to read it

Higher means more private debt relative to the economy. The five-year change shows leveraging (rising) or deleveraging (falling).

## What it does not say

Covers domestic financial institutions only: cross-border and shadow lending are missing.

## Source

World Bank, World Development Indicators (CC BY 4.0 per the indicator's metadata), indicator `FS.AST.PRVT.GD.ZS`, annual, dated December 31. Read weekly by the sovereign-panel sync, which rewrites the history so revisions carry through. Compiled from IMF International Financial Statistics.
