Chile · Renewable Freshwater · m³ per person

Latest

45,262cubic meters per person

Methodology

## What this measures

The renewable freshwater that Chile's own rainfall produces each year (river flows and groundwater recharge from precipitation inside the country), divided by its population, in cubic meters per person.

## Why it matters

Water is the resource that limits farming, industry and cities. Hydrologists treat a figure under about a thousand cubic meters per person as water scarcity; many dry countries sit far below it and rely on rivers from upstream, desalination or imported food.

## How to read it

Higher means more water per person from the country’s own territory. The total resource is almost fixed, so the line moves mainly because population changes: a falling line usually means more people sharing the same water.

## What it does not say

It leaves out rivers that flow in from neighbors, which matters a great deal for countries such as Egypt, Iraq and Hungary, and desalinated or recycled water. It is an average over the whole country and says nothing about where the water falls, when, or how much is actually used.
