Methodology
## What this measures
The average yield on Japan's benchmark long-term government bond over the year.
## Why it matters
The marginal cost of new borrowing. Net interest follows this rate with a lag set by the debt's maturity.
## How to read it
When the yield sits above the average rate on the existing debt stock, the interest bill is set to rise as debt rolls over.
## What it does not say
An annual average hides intra-year stress; for daily readings use the market series where the lattice carries one.
