Methodology
## What this measures
Deaths per 1,000 people in Poland during the year (crude death rate).
## Why it matters
Together with births it sets natural population growth; in ageing countries it rises even as health improves.
## How to read it
Higher means more deaths relative to population. It first falls with development, then rises again as a population ages.
## What it does not say
A crude rate mixes mortality with age structure; it is not a measure of health on its own. Recent years are UN estimates.
