Methodology

## What this measures

How much more Zambia's economy produced this year than last, after stripping out inflation.

## Why it matters

Growth is what makes debt affordable: when growth outruns the interest rate on the debt, the debt ratio can fall without austerity.

## How to read it

Compare with the country's trend and with its interest rate. A single year is noisy; the three-year average is the steadier read (it is what Country Strength uses).

## What it does not say

GDP measures output, not welfare or distribution. Small, open economies (Ireland, Luxembourg) can swing on multinational accounting.
