Methodology
## What this measures
Of the recalls the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced over the latest 12 months, the percentage whose title or hazard description name a fire, burn or overheating hazard.
## Why it matters
The hazard mix shows where product risk is building: lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes and power banks, furniture tip-overs, infant sleep products. A rising share points to a product category drawing regulators’ attention and recall costs.
## How to read it
Higher means a larger share of recalls carried this hazard. One recall can name several hazards, so the shares across hazards do not add to 100.
## What it does not say
Recalls are announced when CPSC and the firm agree on a remedy, often months after the first reports of harm, so the date is the announcement, not when the hazard appeared. A recall’s size varies from a few hundred units to millions. Food, drugs, cars, boats and firearms are regulated by other agencies and are not here. The hazard is matched from words in the notice, so a recall that mentions a hazard only to rule it out could be counted; a hand check is in the build report.
## How it's built
Trailing 12 months ending with the month shown, counted by recall date. A recall counts when its title or hazard text contains one of these words (set before any count was made): fire, burn, burns, overheat, flame, ignite, thermal runaway. Months with fewer than 60 recalls in the window are left out. Palanor calculation.
