Methodology
## What this measures
The "other" category in the New York Fed household debt report: consumer finance loans, retail store loans and other installment credit that do not fall into the mortgage, home equity, auto, credit card or student loan categories. Trillions of dollars, end of quarter.
## Why it matters
It completes the household balance sheet: the six categories in this report sum to total household debt. It also picks up some of the personal-loan borrowing that grew alongside credit cards.
## How to read it
Read the quarterly change and its share of total household debt. It is the smallest category, so small moves in dollars can be large in percent.
## What it does not say
It mixes several loan types and does not separate them. Buy-now-pay-later plans are mostly not reported to credit bureaus and are largely absent.
