Bitcoin Realized Volatility (30-day)
Latest
25.41% annualized
Methodology
## What this measures
The standard deviation of Bitcoin's daily log returns over the last 30 days, annualized by √365 and shown in percent. Crypto trades every day, so the window and the annualization use calendar days. Palanor computes it from licensed daily closing prices.
## Why it matters
It is the turbulence Bitcoin has actually delivered. Volatility clusters, so it tells you which regime the market is in: a quiet market invites leverage, and a violent one forces it out.
## How to read it
Percent a year. Since 2021 it has run from 16 (August 2023) to 121 (June 2021). Yearly averages were 78 in 2021, 63 in 2022, 42 in 2023, 51 in 2024 and 41 in 2025. Compare it with S&P 500 realized volatility to see how much riskier Bitcoin is than stocks at any moment.
## What it does not say
It looks backward over one month, so it lags turning points and says nothing about what options markets expect next. A day missing from the price record breaks the window, so no reading is published until 30 unbroken days return.
## Source
Computed by Palanor from Bitcoin daily closes (00:00 UTC) supplied under licence by a market data provider. Only the derived volatility is published, never the underlying prices.
