DoD Total Obligational Authority · Army · FY 2027 $ billions

210.1FY2027 $ billions
Methodology
## What this measures
Total obligational authority of the Department of the Army in billions of constant FY 2027 dollars, as the Comptroller deflates it (its own defense price indexes), by fiscal year. FY 1948 to FY 2026.
## Why it matters
Taking out inflation shows real build-ups and drawdowns: Korea, Vietnam, the 1980s, the post-2001 wars.
## How to read it
FY 2026: $210.1 billion in FY 2027 dollars; the highest year in this record is FY 2008 ($393.7 billion).
## What it does not say
Total obligational authority is the money available to commit in a fiscal year, whenever it was appropriated; it is not spending (outlays). War and supplemental funding are included, so the war years jump. The Department of the Navy includes the Marine Corps and the Department of the Air Force the Space Force; defense-wide covers agencies such as the Defense Health Program, the Missile Defense Agency and Special Operations Command. Each new Green Book revises recent years. The constant-dollar base moves with each Green Book, so every value changes when a new edition is loaded.
