Methodology
## What this measures
The mean management tone, from −1 to +1, across Financials companies in the S&P MidCap 400 in the trailing 90 days. Sectors follow GICS. A value is published only when at least 5 companies in the sector have a document in the window.
## Why it matters
Management teams speak for their businesses every quarter. Read across the S&P MidCap 400, their language shows what this group of companies expects before it appears in results or official data.
## How to read it
Higher means more positive language. Compare it with the S&P 500 reading for the same sector (discourse.sentiment.financials) and with the S&P MidCap 400 sentiment reading.
## What it does not say
It is tone, not results. In sectors with few companies, the mix of who reported in the window moves the value as much as any change in tone. Readings before 8 October 2026 use the companies that were members on that date, applied backward, so companies that left the index earlier are missing from older readings.
## The universe
The S&P MidCap 400: 400 mid-sized US-listed companies, below the S&P 500 by market value. Mid-sized companies tend to sell more at home and borrow more at floating rates than the largest firms, so their managements can read the US economy differently. Membership comes from a public constituent list, refreshed monthly, and changes apply from the date they are seen. A value is published only when at least 70% of its members on that date, and at least 200 companies, have a scored document in the 90-day window; on dates below that, nothing is published.
