Methodology
## What this measures
Men enrolled in tertiary education (universities, colleges and other post-secondary programmes, ISCED levels 5–8) in Panama, regardless of age, as a percent of the male population in the five-year age group after secondary school. Annual from 1970 to 2023 (13 years missing); each value is dated December 31 of the year the school year starts in, as UIS reports it.
## Why it matters
Who reaches higher education decides the skills of the next workforce. In most of Latin America and in the world as a whole, women now enroll at higher rates than men, a reversal that shapes labor markets, earnings gaps and family formation.
## How to read it
A gross ratio, so it can exceed 100 where many students are older than the reference ages or study part time. 1970: 7.2%; 2023: 41.6%. Compare women and men with education.wb.tertiary_enrollment_gap.pan (a Palanor calculation).
## What it does not say
Enrollment, not graduation or quality: dropout rates and the mix of short programmes differ widely by country. Recent years are often UIS estimates and are revised.
