U.S. Battery-Electric Share of Light-Duty Vehicles on the Road, EIA Projection (Alternative Transportation Case)

Latest

18.3% of vehicle stock

Methodology

## What this measures

The share of all light-duty vehicles on U.S. roads (cars and light trucks such as SUVs and pickups) that are battery-electric, year by year to 2050, as projected by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in the Alternative Transportation case of its newest Annual Energy Outlook. Every point is EIA's projection, not a count.

## Why it matters

Fleet turnover is slow: a vehicle stays on the road for well over a decade, so the stock share shows how fast gasoline demand, charging load and auto parts markets actually change. The two EIA cases bracket how much federal tailpipe rules matter.

## How to read it

Percent of the light-duty vehicle stock. EIA's Alternative Transportation case: the Counterfactual Baseline without EPA's model year 2027+ tailpipe greenhouse gas standards for light-duty vehicles and freight trucks. In this case carmakers add electric models as electric sales grow, rather than on the plans they announced in 2025, and charging networks grow with electric registrations. In AEO2026 the share rises from 2.07% in 2025 to 18.30% in 2050 (61.8 million of 337.7 million vehicles). EIA's combined Alternative Electricity and Transportation case reaches 18.40%, so it is not carried separately. Compare with the baseline case (eia.aeo.bev_share_ldv_stock.baseline.projection): the gap is EIA's estimate of the rules' effect on the fleet.

## What it does not say

It is a model projection (EIA's National Energy Modeling System) under stated assumptions, not a forecast of policy, prices or technology. Battery-electric means the 100-, 200- and 300-mile electric cars and light trucks in EIA's table; plug-in hybrids are not counted. EIA labels every year from 2025 a projection. A new edition replaces the whole path.

## History

Single release: the projection path from the newest Annual Energy Outlook, one point a year to 2050. Each new edition replaces the whole path, so the series holds one edition at a time; EIA labels every year in it a projection, so it has no measured history.
