Residential Heating Oil Price · US

Latest

6.19$/gal

Methodology

## What this measures

The average price households pay for delivered No. 2 heating oil in the US, in dollars per gallon including taxes, from EIA's weekly survey.

## Why it matters

Heating oil is the main competing delivered fuel for homes off the natural gas grid, especially in the Northeast. Its price against propane shapes what households pay to heat and which fuel new or converting homes choose.

## How to read it

Compare with the residential propane price per unit of heat (heating oil carries about 1.5 times the heat of propane per gallon). Higher heating oil prices make propane look cheaper to switchers.

## What it does not say

EIA collects residential and wholesale propane and heating oil prices only during the heating season, October through March. The series has no readings from April to September each year; a gap in summer is normal, not a stopped feed. It is a national average; Northeast states dominate heating oil use.
