Diesel Price · US average

Methodology
## What this measures
The average price at the pump for No. 2 diesel fuel in the United States, in dollars per gallon including taxes. EIA surveys a sample of stations every Monday morning.
## Why it matters
Diesel moves the goods economy: trucking, rail, farming, construction and delivery all run on it, so its price feeds freight rates and then the cost of almost everything that is shipped. It also competes with heating oil for the same barrels, which makes it prone to spikes going into winter.
## How to read it
Higher means more expensive. The gap between diesel and gasoline is itself a read on distillate supply: a wide gap points to tight diesel markets rather than expensive crude. Compare regions to see where supply is tightest, and compare with the wholesale diesel spot price to see how much is being passed through.
## What it does not say
It includes federal and state taxes, which differ by state. It is an average across stations and does not show what large fleets pay under contract or at truck stops with volume discounts. It is not seasonally adjusted.
