Methodology
## What this measures
The combined share-price performance of the seven largest U.S. technology companies: Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Tesla. Each company counts in proportion to its market value, the way the S&P 500 is weighted.
## Why it matters
These seven companies are about a third of the S&P 500's value, so how they trade decides much of what "the market" did. Read beside the S&P 500 without them (equities.sp500_ex_mag7.index) to see whether a rally is broad or carried by a few names.
## How to read it
100 is the value on January 4, 2021. A reading of 250 means the group is worth two and a half times what it was then, from price moves alone. On October 8, 2026 it read 299.9; the S&P 500 without the seven read 179.4.
## What it does not say
Dividends are not included. Weights use each company's current share count, so in earlier years they ignore buybacks and new issuance.
