Methodology
## What this measures
The P/E ratio of the typical S&P 100 company: half of the companies with positive earnings over the last four reported quarters are valued above this multiple and half below.
## Why it matters
The group P/E is pulled by the largest companies. The median is not, so the gap between the two shows how much a few giants decide the market's valuation.
## How to read it
A ratio: market value ÷ trailing-twelve-month GAAP net income. Companies with losses are left out of the median because a P/E on a loss has no meaning.
## What it does not say
Not a forward P/E. It uses today's S&P 100 members and current share counts back in time.
## Source
Net income from company filings with the SEC (XBRL, public domain). Share prices received through a licensed market data provider. Ratio computed by Palanor.
