S&P 500 Sector Weight: Consumer Staples

Latest

5.16% of S&P 500 market value

Methodology

## What this measures

The combined market value of the S&P 500 companies in the Consumer Staples sector (GICS), as a percent of the combined market value of all of today's S&P 500 companies. Daily, from January 2021, when Palanor's stored closing prices begin. The eleven sectors add up to 100.

## Why it matters

Sector weights show what an S&P 500 index fund actually owns. When one sector's weight rises, the index rides more on that industry's fortunes, and the shift tells you where investors have moved money and expectations.

## How to read it

Each day's value is the sum of price times shares for the sector's companies, divided by the same sum over every member. A rising weight means the sector's stocks did better than the rest of the index (with today's membership); it does not mean companies joined the sector. Read the eleven together: equities.sp500.sector_weight.<sector>.

## What it does not say

It is not S&P Dow Jones Indices' official sector weighting, which is licensed and float-adjusted. It applies today's members, today's GICS sector of each company and each company's current share count to every past date, so earlier readings leave out companies that have since left the index (survivorship bias), ignore buybacks and new issuance, and file companies that changed sector under their current one. Total market value is used, not the free float. Share classes of one company (such as Alphabet's) count once. A day is published only when at least 90% of today's members have a closing price.

## Source

Closing prices received through a licensed market data provider; share counts from company filings with the SEC (public domain); sectors from the public S&P 500 constituent list (GICS sectors). Calculated by Palanor. Display only: not available through the Palanor API.
