Methodology
## What this measures
This signal measures the difference between the yield on a 5-year nominal Treasury security and the yield on a 5-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Security. The spread represents the average annual inflation rate that would equate the returns of the two instruments over the next five years.
## Why it matters
The breakeven rate reflects what bond investors are pricing in for inflation over the medium term, which shapes expectations for central bank policy, borrowing costs, and real returns. Organizations use it to assess whether inflation pressures are seen as transitory or persistent, informing decisions on capital allocation, wage setting, and hedging strategies. When market-implied inflation rises or falls significantly, it often precedes shifts in monetary policy that affect financing conditions and demand.
## How to read it
A higher breakeven rate indicates that investors expect greater inflation over the next five years; a lower rate suggests more subdued inflation expectations. Compare the level to historical ranges and to the central bank's stated inflation target to gauge whether the market sees inflation as controlled or at risk of overshooting.
## What it does not say
The breakeven rate is not a forecast of realized inflation. It includes a premium for inflation risk and reflects supply and demand dynamics in the Treasury market, so it can diverge from actual inflation outcomes.
