Methodology

## What this measures

This measures the spot exchange rate between the Brazilian real and the US dollar, expressed as the number of reals required to purchase one dollar. The rate is published by the Brazilian central bank as its daily reference.

## Why it matters

Organizations with revenue, costs or contracts in Brazil face direct currency exposure; a weaker real reduces the dollar value of Brazilian earnings and raises the local-currency cost of dollar-denominated debt. The rate also signals investor confidence in Brazil's economy and monetary policy, which shapes the risk and return of operations in the country.

## How to read it

A rise means the real is weakening, more reals are needed to buy one dollar, which makes Brazilian goods cheaper for foreign buyers and imports more expensive. A fall means the real is strengthening. Compare this rate to levels at the time of pricing decisions, hedges or budget assumptions to assess currency gain or loss.

## What it does not say

This does not indicate forward rates, hedging costs or the real's performance against currencies other than the dollar. It does not explain the drivers of exchange-rate movements or predict future direction.
