Women on U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls
Latest
79,713thousands of jobs
Methodology
## What this measures
The number of jobs on U.S. nonfarm payrolls held by women, from the Current Employment Statistics survey of about 120,000 businesses and government agencies. Thousands, seasonally adjusted, monthly since January 1964.
## Why it matters
Payrolls are the headline monthly jobs count. Splitting them by sex shows which jobs are being added or lost: health care, education and retail employ more women; construction, manufacturing and transportation more men.
## How to read it
Read it beside total nonfarm payrolls (fred_nfp) and payroll jobs held by men (us.labor.payroll_men, the total less this series). Changes from month to month are revised twice and again in the annual benchmark each February.
## What it does not say
It counts jobs, not people: a woman with two jobs counts twice. It leaves out the self-employed, farm workers and private household workers. The household survey (fred_lns12000002) counts employed women instead.
