## What this measures
This series measures the spot exchange rate between the US dollar and the Swiss franc, expressed as the number of francs per dollar. It reflects the price at which one currency trades for the other in the foreign exchange market on each business day.
## Why it matters
Exchange rates determine the cost of cross-border transactions, including procurement, sales revenue, and financial obligations denominated in foreign currency. Organizations with Swiss operations, suppliers, or customers face margin changes when the rate moves. The franc is also a benchmark safe-haven currency, so shifts signal changes in global risk sentiment that affect financing conditions and capital flows.
## How to read it
A rise means the dollar is strengthening against the franc; each dollar buys more francs, making Swiss goods cheaper for US buyers and US goods more expensive for Swiss buyers. A fall means the franc is strengthening. Compare levels over time to assess the direction and magnitude of currency moves relevant to your exposures.
## What it does not say
The rate does not forecast future moves or explain why the shift occurred. It does not capture transaction costs, forward rates, or the hedging strategies available to manage currency risk.
