Methodology
## What this measures
CPI, Hospital Services is the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index subindex for hospital and related services. It tracks the price level of hospital care for urban consumers.
## Why it matters
Hospital services have been among the fastest-inflating categories in the consumer basket for decades, driving health benefit costs and shaping workforce compensation strategy. Organizations with self-insured plans or negotiated provider contracts face these price pressures directly.
## How to read it
The index rises when hospital prices increase and falls when they decrease. Compare its rate of change to overall CPI or wage growth to measure relative cost pressure. The base period is 1982–84, so the index level itself has no intrinsic meaning; only the direction and pace of change matter.
## What it does not say
This index measures price, not utilization, quality or total spending on hospital care. It does not explain why prices rise or identify which services, procedures or payers drive the trend.
