Methodology
## What this measures
This measures the inflation-adjusted value of all goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States. It is expressed in billions of chained 2017 dollars at a seasonally adjusted annual rate.
## Why it matters
Growth in real output signals expanding demand for labor, materials and capital, which affects hiring plans, wage pressure and investment returns. A contracting economy typically means tighter budgets, lower revenue growth and greater caution in long-term commitments. Real GDP sets the backdrop for nearly every strategic decision about capacity, pricing and risk.
## How to read it
A rising series indicates economic expansion; a falling series indicates contraction. Compare consecutive quarters to gauge the pace of growth or the depth of a downturn. Because the data are seasonally adjusted and annualized, short-term volatility reflects genuine shifts in output rather than calendar effects.
## What it does not say
This does not capture distribution of income, quality of life, or activity in the informal economy. It also does not reveal which sectors are driving growth or contraction, nor does it indicate whether output is meeting potential.
