Private Investment Contribution to US GDP Growth
Latest
0.82pp of GDP growth, annualized
Methodology
## What this measures
Percentage points of annualized real GDP growth that came from gross private domestic investment: business spending on equipment, structures and software, housing, and the change in inventories.
## Why it matters
Investment is the most volatile part of GDP and often turns first in a slowdown. Business equipment and software spending also carries the AI build-out into the national accounts.
## How to read it
Inventories swing this series hard: a quarter of restocking adds growth that the next quarter often gives back. Read it over several quarters and beside the consumer and trade contributions.
## What it does not say
It does not separate inventories from fixed investment, or business from residential investment. It is revised with each BEA estimate.

U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, National Income and Product Accounts Table 1.1.2 (Contributions to Percent Change in Real Gross Domestic Product), read through FRED, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (series A006RY2Q224SBEA). BEA data are in the public domain. Palanor syncs the series nightly; each quarter's figure is revised with BEA's second and third estimates and annual updates, and the stored history takes those revisions.
