Methodology

## What this measures

USD / HKD measures the Hong Kong dollar spot exchange rate against the US dollar, expressed as the number of Hong Kong dollars per one US dollar. It reflects the daily price at which the two currencies trade in the foreign exchange market.

## Why it matters

Organizations with exposure to Hong Kong markets, suppliers or revenues face currency translation risk when the Hong Kong dollar moves against the US dollar. Because Hong Kong maintains a managed peg to the dollar, sharp moves signal stress in the currency system or central bank intervention. Cross-border pricing, hedging decisions and cash management all depend on the stability and level of this rate.

## How to read it

A rise means the Hong Kong dollar weakens and more Hong Kong dollars are needed to buy one US dollar, raising the cost of US imports and making Hong Kong exports cheaper in dollar terms. A fall means the Hong Kong dollar strengthens. Compare daily observations to detect short-term pressure on the peg or shifts in monetary policy.

## What it does not say

The spot rate does not reveal the volume of intervention by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, forward rate expectations or the sustainability of the currency peg. It does not capture non-deliverable forward pricing or offshore-onshore spreads.
