## What this measures
This is the spot exchange rate giving the number of Japanese yen required to purchase one US dollar. It reflects the relative price of the two currencies in foreign exchange markets.
## Why it matters
The rate directly affects the cost of imports from Japan, the yen value of dollar-denominated revenues, and the competitiveness of goods priced in either currency. Organizations with cross-border operations, supply chains or sales between the US and Japan face immediate translation and margin effects when the rate moves. A stronger dollar makes Japanese goods cheaper for US buyers and US goods more expensive for Japanese customers.
## How to read it
A rise means the dollar is strengthening against the yen; more yen are needed to buy one dollar. A fall means the dollar is weakening. Compare moves over weeks or months to distinguish daily noise from persistent trends.
## What it does not say
The rate reflects market prices at a point in time and does not predict future moves or indicate whether either currency is fairly valued. It does not capture the impact of hedging, differences in inflation, or the full effect on any particular contract or business.
