Methodology
## What this measures
This is the spot exchange rate between the South Korean won and the US dollar, expressing how many won are required to purchase one dollar.
## Why it matters
The won–dollar rate affects the cost of trade with South Korea, the translation of Korean revenue or expenses into dollars, and the relative competitiveness of goods priced in each currency. Movements in the rate signal shifts in monetary policy expectations, risk sentiment toward emerging Asia, or changes in trade flows.
## How to read it
A rising rate means the won is weakening and the dollar is strengthening, making Korean goods cheaper in dollar terms and US goods more expensive in won terms. Compare the rate to its recent range or to other Asian currency pairs to assess whether the move is won-specific or part of broader dollar strength.
## What it does not say
The spot rate does not capture transaction costs, forward expectations, or capital controls that may affect the effective exchange rate for a particular transaction.
