## What this measures
This series measures the spot exchange rate between the Mexican peso and the US dollar, expressed as the number of pesos required to purchase one dollar. It reflects the daily market price at which the two currencies trade.
## Why it matters
The peso-dollar rate affects the cost of cross-border trade, the peso value of dollar-denominated debt, and the competitiveness of Mexican exports to the United States. Organizations with operations, suppliers or customers in both countries face currency exposure that moves with this rate. A shift in the exchange rate changes the peso cost of imported inputs and the dollar revenue from peso sales.
## How to read it
A rise means the peso has weakened (more pesos per dollar); a fall means it has strengthened. Compare the current rate to recent levels to gauge the direction and size of currency moves. The rate is quoted in pesos per dollar, so higher numbers indicate a cheaper peso.
## What it does not say
This series shows the spot rate but does not explain why the rate moved or predict future moves. It does not capture forward rates, hedging costs, or the impact of currency controls.
