Methodology
## What this measures
This tracks the Producer Price Index for All Commodities, a measure of the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. The index is set to 100 in 1982.
## Why it matters
Rising producer prices signal increasing input costs, which can squeeze margins if organizations cannot pass them through to customers. The index helps stewards anticipate inflationary pressure in their supply chains and adjust purchasing, pricing or hedging strategies accordingly.
## How to read it
The index rises when producer prices increase and falls when they decline. Compare readings over time to gauge the pace of producer price inflation; larger increases indicate faster cost growth for businesses buying goods.
## What it does not say
The index does not reflect consumer prices, regional price variation, or the ability of any specific producer to raise prices. It does not indicate profit margins or demand conditions.
