Real Disposable Personal Income

Methodology

## What this measures

Real disposable personal income is the inflation-adjusted after-tax income available to U.S. households each month, measured in billions of chained 2017 dollars at a seasonally adjusted annual rate. It represents the cash flow households have to spend or save.

## Why it matters

This figure determines how much room households have to maintain or increase consumption, which drives roughly two-thirds of GDP. A sustained rise signals that employees, proprietors and benefit recipients are collecting more purchasing power, which eventually shows up in revenue for most consumer-facing organizations. A flattening or decline warns that demand may soften even if nominal spending appears stable.

## How to read it

Higher values mean households are taking home more real income; lower values mean less. Compare recent levels to the prior year or the pre-recession peak to see whether purchasing power is expanding or contracting. Because the series is seasonally adjusted and expressed at an annual rate, month-to-month changes reflect true shifts in household resources rather than calendar effects.

## What it does not say

The series does not break out income by source, region or household type, so it cannot show whether gains are concentrated among high earners or spread broadly. It also does not reveal how households allocate the income between spending and saving.

## Source

The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes this series as part of the National Income and Product Accounts. Palanor pulls it from the FRED API nightly.
