## What this measures
This series measures the number of Taiwan dollars required to purchase one US dollar in the spot foreign exchange market. It reflects the exchange rate between the two currencies on a daily basis.
## Why it matters
The rate affects the cost of trade between Taiwan and the United States, influencing the price competitiveness of Taiwanese exports and the expense of importing American goods and services. Organizations with supply chains, sales or financial exposures spanning both economies face currency translation risk that moves with this rate. A stronger Taiwan dollar lowers the local-currency cost of dollar-denominated debts and purchases but may pressure exporters' margins.
## How to read it
A rise in the rate means the Taiwan dollar has weakened against the US dollar, making Taiwanese goods cheaper for American buyers and raising the Taiwan-dollar cost of American imports. A fall signals a stronger Taiwan dollar. Compare the current rate to past levels to assess whether currency movements are expanding or contracting cross-border margins.
## What it does not say
The spot rate does not reveal forward expectations, central bank intervention activity or the volume of currency traded. It reflects prevailing market prices but does not explain the policy, capital flow or trade dynamics driving those prices.
