Methodology

## What this measures

This series measures the dollar value of share buybacks by S&P 500 companies over the trailing twelve months, derived from quarterly filings.

## Background

For each S&P 500 company, payments for repurchase of common stock (us-gaap PaymentsForRepurchaseOfCommonStock) from SEC EDGAR XBRL, derived into quarters and summed over four. Aggregated by calendar quarter as for S&P 500 capex. Companies that bought nothing in a quarter usually omit the line, which breaks their twelve-month record; they are left out rather than guessed, so the total slightly understates the level and is best read for its trend. Coverage is stored with each point. Synced weekly by /api/cron/edgar-flows-sync.

## Why it matters

Buybacks signal how much cash management is returning to shareholders rather than reinvesting in the business or holding as reserves. A rising trend suggests confidence in earnings and share price, or pressure to support the stock; a falling trend may reflect tighter liquidity, strategic caution, or a shift toward investment. The aggregate tells you whether large US corporations are in distribution mode or preservation mode.

## How to read it

A rising series means more capital is flowing back to shareholders. A falling series means companies are curtailing returns, which may reflect weaker cash generation, higher uncertainty, or competing uses for funds. Compare the level to prior quarters to see whether the capital window is open or closing.

## What it does not say

The series does not capture companies that reported no repurchases in a quarter and thus omitted the line item, so the total modestly understates the true level. It does not distinguish buybacks driven by earnings strength from those driven by financial engineering or shareholder pressure.

## Source

Palanor reads payments for repurchase of common stock from SEC EDGAR XBRL filings, which are public domain. The data come from 10-Q and 10-K reports filed by S&P 500 companies.

## Revision — 2026-09-26

Universe updated to current S&P 500 constituents (8 out, 3 in). Out: Builders FirstSource, Molson Coors and The Trade Desk, which left the index on 21 September 2026; Electronic Arts, which was taken private and left on 5 August 2026; and MongoDB, Cloudflare, Snowflake and Zoom, which were never members and had been included in error since May 2026. In: Bloom Energy, Everpure and Illumina, which joined on 21 September 2026. Membership now comes from a dated constituent list refreshed monthly. The corrected list applies from 26 September 2026. Readings before that date are unchanged.
