## What this measures
This signal measures what percentage of machine-coded world news events, weighted by article count, fall into the CAMEO QuadClass 4 category of material conflict: force, coercion, assault, fighting, sanctions and seizures. Each event is weighted by the number of articles that reported it.
## Background
Share of all article-weighted world news events that are material conflict (CAMEO QuadClass 4: force, coercion, assault, fighting, sanctions, seizures).
Computed from GDELT's daily event export (data.gdeltproject.org/events), which machine-codes world news into CAMEO events with two actors, an event type and a Goldstein score from −10 (most conflictual) to +10 (most cooperative). Every event is weighted by the number of articles that reported it. The day is the day GDELT ingested the events. Noisy day to day; read a 7- or 30-day average. GDELT permits unrestricted use with citation: The GDELT Project, gdeltproject.org. Synced daily by /api/cron/gdelt-events-sync.
## Why it matters
A rising share indicates that conflict events are occupying a larger portion of the global news agenda, which can signal escalating geopolitical risk, shifts in supply chain vulnerabilities, or the need to review operations in affected regions. Organizations with international exposure use this to monitor the broader security environment and calibrate risk assessments. Sustained elevation may precede changes in regulatory posture, sanctions regimes or insurance costs.
## How to read it
The share is expressed in percent. A rise means material conflict events are claiming a larger fraction of reported world events; a fall means they are receding relative to other news. Day-to-day readings are noisy; read a 7- or 30-day average for a clearer trend.
## What it does not say
This signal does not identify which regions or actors are involved, nor does it measure the severity or outcome of conflicts. It reflects the volume and spread of reporting, not the scale of physical violence or economic damage.
