Ecuador Material Conflict Share of News Events (GDELT, Weekly)

Methodology
## What this measures
Of all the news events that GDELT located in Ecuador in a week, the share that are material conflict: CAMEO QuadClass 4, which covers force, coercion, assaults, fighting, blockades, seizures and sanctions. Each event is weighted by the number of articles that reported it. Weeks run Monday to Sunday by the day GDELT ingested the events, and each value is dated to the Sunday.
## Why it matters
Ecuador is not covered by the newspaper-based geopolitical risk indexes, so this is the closest regular read of how violent its news is. Gang violence, states of emergency, prison riots and protests over mining and oil projects all register here.
## How to read it
Higher means a larger part of the news coming out of Ecuador is about conflict rather than talks, statements or cooperation. Ecuador is a small country in the news, with 190 to 760 located events in most weeks (a median of 45 a day, too few to read daily), so its share swings about twice as much as Chile's or Brazil's. A single widely reported incident can move one week, so read a four-week average and compare with the country's own history.
## What it does not say
It is a share of news coverage, machine-coded, not a count of incidents or casualties. Events are placed by GDELT's geocoder, which can mislocate a story. It says nothing about who is involved or why. Weeks with fewer than 50 located events are left blank.
