Methodology
## What this measures
This measures the share of world news articles about sanctions, as a percentage of all articles processed by GDELT on a given day. GDELT's Global Knowledge Graph tags clusters of news articles with themes; the value reflects the proportion whose cluster carries the SANCTIONS theme, weighted by article count.
## Background
Share of world news articles about sanctions.
GDELT's Global Knowledge Graph tags clusters of world news articles with themes. The value is the share of all articles in the day's GKG file whose cluster carries the theme SANCTIONS, in percent, weighted by the cluster's article count. Noisy day to day; read a 7- or 30-day average. The GDELT Project, gdeltproject.org — unrestricted use with citation. Synced daily by /api/cron/gdelt-events-sync.
## Why it matters
Sanctions signal geopolitical friction, trade restrictions, and supply-chain risk. A rise in sanctions coverage may precede regulatory changes, compliance burdens, or shifts in market access that affect sourcing, revenue, or partner viability. Organizations exposed to cross-border trade or regulated sectors use this to anticipate disruption and adjust plans before formal announcements cascade.
## How to read it
Read a 7- or 30-day average; the daily figure is noisy. A rise means sanctions occupy more of the news cycle, suggesting heightened enforcement, new targets, or intensifying disputes. A fall indicates sanctions have receded from coverage, though existing regimes may persist.
## What it does not say
This does not measure the number, severity, or targets of actual sanctions, nor whether coverage reflects new announcements or commentary on standing measures. It is a metric of media attention, not policy implementation.
