Methodology
## What this measures
This signal measures Germany's net exports of goods over the trailing twelve months, expressed in US dollars. It sums the monthly merchandise trade balance to smooth volatility and reveal the trend in Germany's trade position.
## Background
Germany's goods trade balance with the world, trailing 12 months, $ billions.
Σ12 of the monthly merchandise trade balance from the OECD's International Merchandise Trade Statistics (FRED XTNTVA01DEM667S, US dollars, seasonally adjusted) ÷ 1e9. Computed monthly by /api/cron/fred-composites.
## Why it matters
Germany's trade surplus reflects the health of its export-oriented manufacturing base and global demand for its machinery, vehicles, and industrial goods. A widening surplus signals strong external demand and competitiveness; a narrowing surplus or shift toward deficit may indicate weakening global growth, supply chain disruptions, or erosion of Germany's export advantage. Changes in this balance ripple through European supply chains and affect currency markets.
## How to read it
A rising value indicates Germany is exporting more goods than it imports, strengthening its trade surplus. A falling value means the surplus is narrowing or the deficit is widening. Compare the current level to historical norms to assess whether Germany's export engine is accelerating or slowing.
## What it does not say
This signal covers only merchandise trade, excluding services, investment income, and transfers. It does not identify which trading partners, sectors, or product categories are driving changes in the balance.
