New Fund LEIs Registered (United States, Monthly)

Latest

480LEIs

Methodology

## What this measures

The number of Legal Entity Identifiers first issued in a month for funds (GLEIF entity category FUND) whose legal address is in the United States, by each record's initial registration date. An LEI is the 20-character code that identifies a legal entity in financial transactions and regulatory reports; GLEIF publishes every one.

## Why it matters

New LEIs mark entities entering the financial system: companies, funds and special-purpose vehicles that start trading, issuing or reporting. The count is a formation signal for the part of the economy that touches capital markets.

## How to read it

The series starts in January 2013 at 109. The latest reading, for September 2026, is 480. The high is 1,326 (November 2017) and the low 75 (June 2014). Funds register when they start trading derivatives or filing reports that ask for an LEI, so the count is a monthly read on new U.S. fund vehicles reaching the markets.

## What it does not say

Before GLEIF began operating in 2014, LEIs were issued by local operating units under the interim global system, and those records keep their original dates; the series starts in 2013 because the 2012 months hold migrated batches. An LEI is registered when an entity needs one, mostly to trade, issue securities or file regulatory reports, so the count follows rules as much as business formation: most companies never get one, and a new entity can register years after it was formed. Records marked DUPLICATE or ANNULLED are left out; LEIs that later lapse stay in the month they were first issued. Late registrations and status changes can still move the last three months.

## Source

Counted by Palanor from the GLEIF Golden Copy of 2026-10-19 (Level 1 LEI records, by initial registration date); later months from the GLEIF API (api.gleif.org), the last three months rewritten each month. GLEIF LEI data is provided under CC0 1.0: "The data available through the Access Service are provided under the CC0 licence." Source: GLEIF.
