Sub-Saharan Africa · HIV Treatment Coverage · % of people living with HIV
Latest
82.8% of people living with HIV
Methodology
## What this measures
The share of all people living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa who are receiving antiretroviral therapy. Modelled estimate. Yearly from 2000.
## Why it matters
Treatment keeps people with HIV alive and, once the virus is suppressed, stops them passing it on. Coverage is the single best gauge of whether the response is reaching people.
## How to read it
Higher is better. Annual, dated December 31 of the reference year. The denominator is everyone estimated to be living with HIV, diagnosed or not. Regions are the World Bank's groupings; the Bank computes each aggregate itself, weighting countries by population.
## What it does not say
Being on treatment is not the same as having the virus suppressed, and coverage says nothing about new infections (see HIV incidence). The estimates come from models fitted to surveillance and programme data and are revised every year.
