197deaths per 100,000 live births
Methodology
## What this measures
Women in the world who die from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth, during pregnancy or within 42 days of its end, for every 100,000 live births. Modelled estimate. Yearly from 1985.
## Why it matters
It measures whether women can reach skilled birth attendants, emergency obstetric care and safe blood when they need them. UN Sustainable Development Goal target 3.1 is a global ratio below 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030.
## How to read it
Lower is better. Annual, dated December 31 of the reference year. The newest year comes from the latest round of UN estimates, and each round revises the whole history. The world value is the World Bank's own aggregate.
## What it does not say
Most countries with high maternal mortality do not register every death and its cause, so these are model estimates with wide uncertainty ranges; small year-to-year moves are within that range.
