Peru · Deaths from Non-Communicable Diseases · % of all deaths

Latest

41.59% of deaths

Methodology

## What this measures

The share of all deaths in Peru caused by non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and other non-infectious conditions), in percent of all deaths. WHO publishes estimates for 2000, 2010, 2015 and 2019 to 2021; each is dated December 31.

## Why it matters

As infectious disease and maternal and child deaths fall and populations age, chronic disease becomes the main cause of death. That shift changes what health systems, insurers, employers and drug and device makers have to plan for.

## How to read it

A higher share means chronic disease accounts for more of the deaths that happen; it is not a death rate. Countries further along the health transition, with fewer deaths from infection and childbirth and older populations, have higher shares. The 2020 and 2021 shares fall in many places because COVID-19, counted as a communicable disease, added deaths: the drop is not a fall in chronic disease.

## What it does not say

It does not say how many people die or how early. A share can rise because other causes fall. These are modelled WHO estimates built from vital registration where it is complete and from surveys and models elsewhere, and WHO revises the whole series with each round.
