Ethiopia · Neonatal Mortality Rate · deaths per 1,000 live births

Latest

25.2deaths per 1,000 live births

Methodology

## What this measures

Babies in Ethiopia who die in the first 28 days of life, for every 1,000 born alive. Yearly from 1977.

## Why it matters

The first month is the most dangerous period of childhood, and as under-five deaths fall, a growing share of them happen here. It reflects care at birth: skilled attendants, clean delivery, care for premature babies. UN Sustainable Development Goal target 3.2 is 12 or fewer per 1,000 in every country by 2030.

## How to read it

Lower is better. Annual, dated December 31 of the reference year. Read it with under-five mortality: a widening gap means older children are gaining faster than newborns.

## What it does not say

These are modelled estimates from surveys and civil registration of uneven quality, revised as new data arrive. Recent years in countries without vital registration rest on projections.
