Share of U.S. Household Assets · Real Estate (Fed Z.1)
Latest
24.83% of total assets
Methodology
## What this measures
The value of real estate at market value held by U.S. households and nonprofit organizations, as a percentage of their total assets (household.z1.assets.total), at the end of each quarter: real estate (household.z1.assets.real_estate), divided by total assets. Palanor's arithmetic on the Federal Reserve's Financial Accounts (Z.1), table B.101. The six shares in this family (household.z1.asset_share.*) add up to 100.
## Why it matters
The mix of household wealth shows how exposed families are to house prices, the stock market and interest rates, and how that exposure has changed across decades.
## How to read it
Percent of total assets. A rising share can mean the asset grew or the others shrank; compare with the dollar levels.
## What it does not say
End-of-quarter levels in nominal dollars, not adjusted for inflation. Market values move with house and stock prices as much as with saving. The sector includes nonprofit organizations (charities, universities, foundations) as well as households, and the Fed revises past quarters with every release.
