U.S. Household and Nonprofit Assets · Other Nonfinancial Assets (Fed Z.1)

Latest

10,189.9$ billions

Methodology

## What this measures

The value of the nonfinancial assets of U.S. households and nonprofit organizations other than real estate: consumer durable goods, and nonprofits' equipment and intellectual property (nonfinancial assets minus real estate, Palanor arithmetic), at the end of each quarter, in billions of dollars. From the Federal Reserve's Financial Accounts of the United States (Z.1), table B.101, the balance sheet of households and nonprofit organizations. Quarterly from 1945, wherever every input line reports.

## Why it matters

Household balance sheets set how much families can spend, borrow and absorb shocks. Set against total assets (household.z1.asset_share.*), the line shows how the mix of household wealth shifts between homes, stocks, pensions and cash.

## How to read it

Billions of current dollars. For its weight in the whole, read the share of total assets it counts toward (household.z1.asset_share.other).

## What it does not say

End-of-quarter levels in nominal dollars, not adjusted for inflation. Market values move with house and stock prices as much as with saving. The sector includes nonprofit organizations (charities, universities, foundations) as well as households, and the Fed revises past quarters with every release.
