Methodology
## What this measures
The market value of corporate equities U.S. households and nonprofit organizations hold directly and indirectly (BOGZ1LM153064475Q), divided by the market value of their real estate (HNOREMV), at each quarter end. A Palanor calculation. Q4 1945 to Q2 2026.
## Why it matters
Stocks against housing, the two pillars of American wealth. Above 1, households have more in the stock market than in their homes and land.
## How to read it
Q2 2026: 1.37. It first reached 1 in Q4 1945; the highest before the latest quarter was 1.24 in Q4 2025.
## What it does not say
Market values, so they move with stock prices. Households and nonprofit organizations are one sector in Z.1 (nonprofits hold a modest share). Indirect holdings follow the Fed’s allocation of pension, mutual fund and insurance assets, an estimate. Real estate includes land and nonprofits’ buildings; mortgage debt is not subtracted from either side.
