Methodology

## What this measures

Humanitarian funding reported to FTS for the year from donors that FTS classes as private organisations (foundations, companies, and individuals as a group), in US$ billions.

## Why it matters

It shows whether private givers move when governments cut.

## How to read it

A year is the year the money is for (FTS's "usage year"), paid plus committed. The newest complete year keeps rising for months as late reports arrive; the current year is in the year-to-date series.

## What it does not say

Private money is the least completely reported to FTS: much of it goes to NGOs and the Red Cross and Red Crescent, which do not all report what they receive. FTS records what donors and agencies report to it; it does not estimate missing reports. Reporting is voluntary and some donors report late or not at all, so recent years rise for months as reports arrive. Commitments count as soon as they are made, before the money is paid.
