World · Electric Car Share of New Car Sales
Latest
25% of new car sales
Methodology
## What this measures
Electric cars (battery-electric and plug-in hybrid) as a share of all new passenger cars sold worldwide, one value per calendar year, dated December 31.
## Why it matters
The global pace at which new car buyers switch to electric drives oil demand, battery and minerals demand and the fortunes of carmakers. China accounts for most electric car sales, so the world figure leans on it.
## How to read it
Percent of new car sales. Plug-in hybrids count as electric. Conventional (non-plug-in) hybrids are not counted as electric, so gasoline-only cars are a smaller share than one minus this figure.
## What it does not say
New cars only, not the fleet on the road, and not vans, trucks or buses.
