India · Bank Nonperforming Loans Ratio (IMF FSI)

1.85%
Methodology
## What this measures
Nonperforming loans as a percent of total gross loans held by deposit takers. India, quarterly.
## Why it matters
Bad loans are where a credit cycle turns into bank losses. A rising ratio warns of tighter lending and, if fast, of a banking problem.
## How to read it
Higher is worse. Definitions of "nonperforming" (usually 90 days overdue) differ somewhat across countries, so compare a country with itself.
## What it does not say
Compiled by national authorities under the IMF's FSI guide; accounting and supervisory rules differ across countries, and coverage of the banking system varies.
