Methodology

## What this measures

Deposit takers' net income as a percent of average capital (return on equity), annualized. France, quarterly.

## Why it matters

Profitable banks rebuild capital and keep lending; weak profits leave them exposed and slow credit growth.

## How to read it

Higher means more profitable. Very high returns can also signal risk-taking.

## What it does not say

Compiled by national authorities under the IMF's FSI guide; accounting and supervisory rules differ across countries, and coverage of the banking system varies.

## Source

International Monetary Fund, Financial Soundness Indicators (FSI), Core and Additional Indicators, read from the IMF data API (api.imf.org, dataflow IMF.STA/FSIC). https://data.imf.org/ Attribution: Source: International Monetary Fund. Transformations by Palanor where stated. Palanor stores the IMF's figures as published, rounded to at most four significant decimals. IMF data is available free of charge from the IMF.
