Trinidad and Tobago · General Government Net Debt (IMF)

Latest

58.76% of GDP

Methodology

## What this measures

General government gross debt minus the financial assets that correspond to debt instruments, as a percent of GDP. Trinidad and Tobago.

## Why it matters

Credits governments for the financial assets they hold, so it separates a country that borrows to build a fund from one that borrows to spend.

## How to read it

Higher means more debt after netting assets. Negative means the government holds more financial assets than debt.

Each point is one year's figure in the newest World Economic Outlook, dated December 31. The series stops the year before the WEO's own year; the IMF's forecast from there is a separate series (the same name with "IMF Projection"), so this line never mixes measured and forecast years. The newest year is often still an IMF estimate, and the whole history is revised with each edition.

## What it does not say

Many economies do not report net debt, and which assets are netted differs by country.
